What Is A Support Person Role?

Weight loss is a sensitive topic and a personal choice. What do you say to someone who is struggling with weight? Unfortunately, there are no magic words. Overweight and obese people know they are overweight, and they know they are often stigmatized for it. As with many difficult topics, when it comes to discussions of weight loss, it’s not just what you say but how you say it that matters.

Living with an overweight friend, partner, parent, child or spouse can be difficult. Loved ones who want to help a family member struggling with weight issues may be hesitant to approach the subject for fear of causing shame or making matters worse. You want to help someone struggling with their weight, but you don't want to hurt their feelings and you certainly do not want to make them feel ashamed. Taking a mindful approach can help get your message across, and if it is welcomed, without hurting their feelings.

If someone you love or care about is struggling with their weight and their perception of themselves, you can help.  However, it requires an approach that is positive and supportive. It’s important to play a positive role in your loved one’s support system.   Learn more about how you can be a positive support person by booking your free consultation with a Certified Coach today!
